Manila—Residents of Brgy. 655 of Intramuros and other sectors join the technically dismissed Intramuros Administration (IA) employees in a picket protest today, demanding Anna Maria Harper, out of the IA office.
Protesters say that Ms. Harper is not only “massacring” trees and jobs but the community of urban poor as well.
Demolition is allegedly part of the “beautification” project of Ms. Harper as well as crime mitigating measure of the Harper administration.
Rolando Salcedo, president of the IA Casual Employees Association said, though there were negotiations for amicable settlement about IA issues, Ms. Harper played deaf and did not take heed to the call of both the community and the workers of IA.
“Our demands are legitimate. We’ve tried our best to settle this all in the most peaceful and friendly manner but Ms. Harper is already dumb and numb about the sentiments of the people here, in Intramuros,” Salcedo lamented.
On the issue of demolition and harassments to the community, Brgy. 655 chairperson Jun Yacob said that Ms. Harper is very much “hot” of demolishing the homes of hundreds of families inside and around Intramuros.
“We are people! Do not treat us garbage that you can just throw away!” Yacob told Harper.
Ferdinand R. Gaite, national president of COURAGE, said the 300,000 strong membership of the militant national center for government employees, support the call of the employees and the residents of Brgy. 655 in their fight for jobs and homes.
“As public servants, we must serve the people and mustn’t work against the people. My advice to Ms. Harper, don’t do another Macapagal-Arroyo unless she’s idolizing the fascist and anti-people way of governance of Mrs. Arroyo,” he said. (Press Release/November 13)
